I wrote this as a modern response to Charley Patton’s “Pony Blues.” Recently the Colorado State
Congress deleted state statutes that were outdated and no longer necessary. Some of them dealt with
laws of horse and carriage. I have had experiences of being in the woods for a good long time and
coming into town ‘with bear grease in my hair.’ The looks I got were actually pretty funny. I may as well
have been riding a Shetland through town. There are elements here too about the departure from a
simpler life that is necessary when you want to contribute to the culture of the modern world.
